THE ART OF PACE BOWLING... THE BASICS

Cricket is a beautiful game. Thinking of the game can give pleasure to many ardent lovers of the game, like me, and playing the game can even give orgasms if you are madly in love with it...

Cricket has got multiple disciplines and pace bowling is a discipline which i practice. I was quiet ignorant of the basics of pace bowling when i started off as i did not have any proper coaching. In nets, i also saw few of my  friends not so strong with the basics. I thought i should write about the basics which can help me and my friends.

Basics-

I would like to start with gripping the ball followed by run-up, leap, delivery, and follow through. Importantly i like to cover the right ways to do it to be free from injuries.

Ball Grip -
The first and important point to be learned by a fast bowler. Variation in grip and seam position have a major influence on the outcome of a delivery.

With the seam vertical, the ball is held in the fingers, resting on the third finger and thumb(left side or over the seam, whichever is comfortable) , with the middle and index fingers either side of the seam.

Have the above grip, make sure that there is atleast two finger space between the ball an palm and bowl with normal action to your friend standing 15 feet apart and make sure the seam comes out straight during delivery. straighter the seam position more the chances of swing.

Inswing - The inswinger moves in the air from the off side of a right handed batsman to the leg side.

Angle the seam towards leg slip or, but keeping it vertical with the shiny side of the ball should be to the left of the bowler.

The ball will swing early if the seam is angled too much towards the legs slip, will swing late if the seam is vertical. The later the ball swings into the batsman, the more effective it will be.

Outswing -  The ball swings from the off stump of a right handed batsman towards the slip fielders.

The ball will swing early if the seam is angled too much towards the slips, will swing late if the seam is vertical. The later the ball swings away from the batsman, the more effective it will be.

Reverse Swing –  Once the ball becomes older and more worn, it will begin to move in the opposite direction to where it would usually swing with no great change in the bowling grip, All this tends to happen very late on in the delivery, making it difficult for the batsman to pick up the changes in the air.

It is all that we have in the basics of grip position – apart from this we have variations like cross seamers, off cutters and leg cutters.

Run- up to the crease  - One of the important aspect of the fast bowling.
How long  -  mark a place, run few paces as you normally do and bowl when you feel comfortable(when you gather enough momentum),  Measure the distance and make it your run up distance. Don’t be predetermined with some feets. It varies for every individual, try to stay Smooth, Balanced, Economical, Rhythmical, Consistent, and relaxed.

Few key points
  • As you set off from the top of your run-up, start by using small steps before changing to larger strides
  • Keep your arms close to your body and your head steady - keep your eyes fixed on the target - the batsman
  • Run in a straight line as if you run in a railway track.
  • Keep the alignment straight to the offside of the batsmen and when you bowl to left handers change just the alignment by changing the run up direction and not your action.
  • Don’t run in too fast or too slow, optimum speed to gather enough momentum.
  • Side on bowlers have slower approach than the front on bowlers. Don’t get confused.
The Bound or the leap
The bound is a jump that allows the bowler to transition from the run-up to the back foot contact position. For a chest on bowler not much transition is needed. So, many chest on bowlers have a low, short bound. In contrast, side on bowlers need to rotate their bodies through ninety degrees and so tend to have a longer, higher bound. A high bound can lead to the knee on the back foot collapsing and so lose momentum. It is very important to keep your non bowling arm high during this action.
The alignment – Very important to keep one away from injuries.
Side on: the back foot is parallel to the bowling crease causing the hips to be side on. The non bowling arm is positioned in front of head so causing the shoulders to align with the hips. A classic example of a side on bowler is Dennis Lillee.
Chest on: the back foot points straight down the track towards the target, aligning the hips parallel to the bowling crease. The non bowling arm is positioned to the side of the head. This aligns the shoulders and chest parallel with the bowling crease and hips. Malcolm Marshall is an example of a chest on bowler.
Mid-way: the back foot is in between the side on and chest on position. A fine example of a mid-way bowler is Allan Donald.
An action that fails to align hips and shoulders at back foot contact is termed a mixed action and can result in lower back pain and long term ill effects.

Delivery
After the front foot contact, the use of non bowling hand comes to picture and it is used to generate pace. Pull the non bowling hand down hard in front which in turn pulls your upper body down and hence the bowling arms comes down faster increasing the pace of the ball. It is crucial for the bowling arm to be stiff, not bent and the wrist rather looser, to ensure smooth release of the ball. keep the bowling arm rotating close to your ear and avoid it from falling away.

Follow through

As you follow through, fold your bowling arm into your body and swing your hips around to finish,  Your momentum will take you towards the batsman but make sure you don't run down the middle of the pitch. Make sure you complete the delivery with a full follow through.

Above all, the basics of bowling is to bowl in good lines and at right lengths. Line on the 3rd,4th and 5th stumps and length between full and good length, of course you can bowl short if you have the pace of steyn.

Apart from this, there are numerous sites with good material and seniors with golden experience to teach you more…
To know the basics is one thing and the application of them is another. It is not so easy as it looks, It requires hours and hours of practice.  Take a ball, go the field, and bowl heart out. Incase if you benefit, leave a comment, it will give me one more orgasm…

EDUCATION - IT'S INCOMPLETE

Education... Dictionary.com says Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge, developing the powers of reasoning and judgment, and generally of preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life.
Going by the definition i feel my so called uneducated my grand father is more educated than the so called educated people whom i see in my office or any where.

I am forced to sit and think. Why there is a discrepancy, All my life i have learned to reason why... Why people who finished graduation seem not completely educated, I guess something is wrong with their schooling. What is wrong with their schooling, i guess something is wrong with the system... What is wrong in the system, we should understand...

As an old adage goes  - Young mind is like fresh cement it captures everything that comes its way.the children comes to school a fresh mind to learn everything that will be taught at the school. What happens at school is the question to be answered?... Let us take myself as an example to make it more realistic and try to answer the questions.

So now we have to identify the flaws in the system going by the definition of education.
It is not only our role to identify the flaws but also our responsibility to fix the flaws.Let us again go by definition, one by one...

Education is the act or process of imparting or acquiring general knowledge - General knowledge is the knowledge available to everyone, starting from sky is blue...
How it is imparted in the school ? - I had a specific period on GK, where my teacher used to teach me what is given in my GK book during the course of the year, nothing more and nothing less.please note i never had any exams on GK as it is not considered a subject.apart from these my school is kind enough to allow students in other GK and QUIZ competitions.

So now GK is being taught to the extent possible, What is wrong with the system ?
let us go by the example used -  At school they taught me sky is blue but they never taught me WHY THE SKY IS BLUE ?  - My education is incomplete. this is an example, very similarly i have been taught with many things without i knowing what it is and why it's so ?

To Fix it - It should be made mandatory in the schooling system that the students should be explained why? why? when ever any phenomenon being explained to them , students should be made to understand the logic behind any topic than to learn something by-heart. If learning why is taught to students from young age it will develop kids overall understanding of any subject and it will help him a life time.

Education is the act of developing the powers of reasoning and judgement - The Powers of reasoning and judgement, believe me or not, i had seldom given an opportunity to reason out and judge at my school. only place where i can practice it during the games hour, where i can reason how i played, how to play, which strategy to follow, and i can also judge my or teams performance. For this i just need a bunch of mates to play with and not necessarily a school. School has once again failed to educate me nor helped me reason out or judge.

To Fix it - Schools should dedicate some periods during the week for emotional, logical, verbal, & non verbal reasoning for the students. Should be taught the ways to reason out. It would be great if they are given some real life cases to reason out and to judge apart from the schoolistic reasoning.

Education is the act or process preparing oneself or others intellectually for mature life  - I should say this is the Gross failure of schooling or even during graduation, recent suicides during release of 12th results and even at IITs and other institutions are the testimony to that fact. If the students are educated to be intellectually mature, the suicides will never happen.

To Fix it - This the most important role of education in students life, to help one grow intellectually to lead a mature life. all the students should go through personal counselling from a dedicated counselor for any particular school. The counselor should understand the concerns of the students and help them fix it in the way the better for every individual students. the role of the counselor should be to guide the students and should make the students to take decisions and should help them lead a life on their own.

We identified the flaws in the system just going by the definition of Education, apart from these there are numerous things to be addressed, yet these are the basics.
Once the basics of the Education is followed at schools and at Colleges during graduation,
am pretty confident that we can see more educated men in our amidst, and more importantly India will become more powerful as a nation in due course because of these educated men.

Dear IPL - I miss you...

May 28th, 7:30 pm... After a long days work, I sat in front of the TV. my mother was watching some idiotic teleserial in Raj TV, note - thats an hindi serial tubbed into tamil, that made me half sick. I quickly changed the channel to 160, those who use Airtel DTH could recognise, yes!!! its SET MAX - the Channel I Subscribe for 2 months every year.(I have unsubscribed now) I guess at-least for next five years.
Its 7:30 -  time for the toss, only then i realized that the IPL season 5 was over the day before and KKR were crowned champions. The fact that there is no cricket to watch made to completely sick...

Really IPL had become a part of our lives, at least for the Cricket lovers. No matter which team played, and who played, the cricket part of it always stood out amidst all the controversies. After a days work or over the weekends it has always enlightened the soul...

Push aside all the controversies, ugly spats, spot fixings, scandals, and politics surrounded the game.
The passion for the game remains the same.

When I quickly scroll the memories of this season the first picture that comes to my mind is the Sachin's six over extra cover of albie morkel, as astonishing as it can get... Eloquence written all over it...

Ajankye rahane was a stand out this year's season not for his big hitting but for his strokes over extra cover and straight down the ground.

AB de villiers outburst against DC, it was a real treat to watch, the best of them was the huge six over extra cover of a near yorker from Steyn.

Rohit Sharma is all class, it always looks like he has more time than any other batsmen, his century against KKR is a testimony to his talent.

Who can forget the on slaught of Chris gayle against Daredevils...13 sixes in an innings says the story...
the poise and power in which he hits them makes him remarkable

Finally it comes to our Dhoni, the helicopter shot against malinga's yorker... man you beauty... very tough shot to play... excellent use of bottom hand...

When i start thinking of bowling only two people come to my Mind.
Steyn.... I have never seen any fast bowler so pumped up and bowl at astonishing pace so accurately with swing... one bowler whom i will pay to watch...

Second comes Narine, the mystery spinner from carribean islands, the land known for fearsome fast bowlers.Don't know when he will be deciphered till then he will rule for sure...

One should not forget fielding, an important aspect of the game. one guy stood out this season...Super man from Australia,  Steven smith...

Just remembering the beautiful moments in the game itself is a pleasure, to realize that we have wait for an year for the next season is a pain...

PS - Dear IPL - I miss you...

( There a many good people always wanted to talk about the controverts and not the game...
for those good hearts, First post has made collection of those controversies into an e-book  Down load it here )

Enjoying every minute of my time... Having the best moments of my life ...

Being satisfied with everything makes my life unsatisfactory...
Hell.. this is a punishment...Something is missing...

What the hell is missing...???

Nothing to pursue... I got nothing to pursue...

I pursued sports all along my school days... Enjoyed it...
I pursued high scores in my 12th std...Got it...
I pursued my love during my college days... Loved it...

and now i got nothing to pursue... Dont tell me baby.. please... I got years on my side...

Monday to Friday vanishes just like that... Week ends even faster...
Looked back and saw what i have done in the past three months... Not much i can see..

What to do... now comes the biggest Million Dollar Question  in my life ?
To sit and prepare for hours for my GMAT and do MBA...
To finish the course and get good job ...

To have everything and still feel empty...

What else to do... I just sit back and wonder what my peers do...
Man.... what the hell are you guys doing ???

Got something to pursue which does not get us in to the same cycle...
I do not know... Never in my life I have felt like this...

I really have no answers... the toughest question i have ever faced...
What to pursue??? I got nothing to pursue...
